Teen Mental Health Training Course
Good Evening Parents:
Our school will participate in building a powerful community of teens ages 15-18 by teaching them how to support a friend or classmate with the evidence-based teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) course. Adolescence is a time of critical change and development. It’s when mental health challenges may first emerge and may be the cause for falling grades, problems with close relationships and substance use. Young people will be prepared to provide support for their peers as well as better cope with mental health challenges themselves. tMHFA was brought to the United States by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing in partnership with Born This Way Foundation, and is tailored to the unique experiences and needs of young people. Its plain language ensures learners at all reading levels can easily follow along.
Ericka Tart and Stephanie Faison are both trained in Youth Mental Health First Aid that can help identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among children and adolescents ages 12-18.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Teen Mental Health First Aid instructor- Andrina Scott, scotta8@gcsnc.com or contact the school directly.

Double Good Popcorn Fundraiser
Good Evening GCMC Families,
This is your proud principal, Mr. Burnette, with a message regarding our last chance push fundraiser with Double Good Popcorn. We are asking, pleading, begging every family to participate. All it requires is to download the Double Good App, join the fundraising event with the event code, share your pop-up store link with family and friends via social media, text, or email. Our school receives 50% of the sales and everything is shipped directly to the doorsteps of the supporters. With GradFest for seniors around the corner, upcoming college visits for juniors in April, and the back to school team building activities in August we are trying to offset as many expenses as possible for students. Last week when we did this fundraiser for the first time we only had 5 students participate. However, with such a low number for student participation we still had gross sales of over $1200 dollars which 50% of that is coming back to our school. Operating in good spirits I can't spread that money across the entire school knowing it came from 5 students versus applying the dollars to just those students. So, we have reupped for a second run of this weeklong fundraiser in hopes of getting school wide participation. Please take 5 minutes to sign up and share to help the school and your students. Staff you are also welcome to create an account and share, as I am doing one to share with my network of friends and family. Students were given the flyer with the event code today in advisory. I have also attached a copy to this message if you need it. Thank you in advance.

Our spirit week is scheduled for November 13th-17th with our annual powder puff game taking place on Thursday Nov. 16th at Smith HS. The gates will open at 6pm and the game will begin around 630pm. Please come out and support.
November is filled with scheduled days out of school, six to be exact, this leave our teachers only 15 instructional days and then we are in December and exams. Today we had only four seniors attend school (thank you to those four seniors) as today was an unauthorized orchestrated senior skip day that was not supported by the school district nor the school. Parents we must emphasize the importance of attending school everyday. We just had two teacher workdays on Thursday and Friday and an upcoming holiday this Friday. Students will eventually go to college, to work, even to the military and take on responsibilities in life where there are no days off just because. Taking an unexcused absences in this juncture of the semester for high school and college classes is not the level of maturity young adults should be aiming for. We have to be leaders and lead with pride the pride of a lion.

Progress Reports 9.19.2023
Good Evening GCMC Families,
This is your proud principal Mr. Burnette with a few very important announcements.
Today, progress reports were sent out to parents electronically to the email provided during registration. We want to ensure that students and families are getting timely feedback about their academic classroom performance. In addition, mandatory tutoring will begin on Tuesday, September 26th. Students will work with teachers during their lunch to help improve their academic performance prior to the end of the grading period. Teachers will hand out a pass that will specify which day a student would need to participate in tutoring and what criteria qualified them for tutoring.
Parents please help our school by encouraging your student to open up an online store for our fundraiser. We currently have only half of our students who have created an account for themselves and shared via email or social media. We would love to reach our financial goal in this fundraiser to help support our students and provide them with incentives and programs throughout the school year.
We want to celebrate our school for being recognized as only one of three high schools in Guilford County to receive a School Report Card rating of an A. In addition we were recognized for having an 100% graduation rate this past school year. Let's keep up the wonderful work.
Yearbooks are currently on sale at jostens.com as well as senior ads are available for purchase until they run out. Please don't miss out on your chance to have a lifelong memory and a page all dedicated to you.
Finally, our EF Tour for Greece in the summer of 2025 will host it's initial interest meeting on Thursday, September 21st in room 309 of the Cowan Bldg. at 6pm. I hope to see you all there as we discuss the wonderful academic opportunity and cultural experience that Greece provides.

Week of 9.11.2023
Good Evening GCMC Families,
This is your proud principal Mr. Burnette with your announcements for the week of September 11th.
As we begin the week, may we all remember the lives of those lost on 9/11, their families, and the life long impact on our nation. It brings me back to the district's mantra, we are BETTER TOGETHER.
On Friday, students were given a packet for our school's first fundraiser. Our school benefits tremendously from this, as we unfortunately do not receive a significant amount of funding due to the nature of our program. We want to encourage you all to share and post the link for your student's store. Our goal is to provide and support our students with as much of a traditional high school experience as possible and any additional funds will help to achieve this outcome.
We are approaching the last weeks of our first quarter. Students have worked hard and must focus on ending the quarter with a bang. Please be sure to communicate with your teachers if you I need of assistance with assignments or course content. Our last progress report prior to report card distribution will go out on September 19th. Attendance is a priority and necessary to your success. Teachers will begin to institute mandatory tutoring for students who have a letter grade below a C.
Please don't forget about our spirit wear that is available on our website for the remainder of the month.
As always lead with pride the pride of a lion.

Week of 8.7.2023
Good Evening GCMC Families,
This is your proud principal Mr. Burnette with your weekly announcements. Students please be sure to login your school issued devices to ensure that the canvas software is working on them. As discussed before your Chromebooks will be required for district and state sponsored testing. Personal devices can always be used for class assignments and work.
Parents I want to inform you about Greensboro College's parking/drop-off policy. Chief Gilmore reached out to me on Friday to remind me that parents are not to drop off their students in front of the Cowan Building. They reserve the right to ticket parents for blocking/stopping the flow of traffic on campus. They have it designed to make the immediate right once you turn onto College Dr. The white house which is the admissions office is the lot that you will turn in and make a U-turn to drop your student off and exit.
Students please remember to park in the appropriate area designated for GCMC. Campus police will ticket and tow vehicles without the approved Greensboro College parking sticker.
On Monday August 7th student will receive a permission slip signed by their parent or guardian to approve them to go off campus for lunch. Starting on Wednesday August 9th students without this documentation on file will not be allowed to leave campus during lunch. We have to be responsible for students while they are in our care and this gives permission for students. Appropriate action will be taken if students leave campus without prior approval.
Attached to the email version of this connect ed you will find a digital copy of the student handbook.
Finally, please be sure to get your MCV vaccinations. Seniors who have not turned proof of this shot into the office have until September 1st to turn in proof. After this date students without the vaccination will not be allowed on campus until they have received it and have the supporting documentation.
Thank you and have a great evening.
